Peter Obi, a candidate for president of Nigeria who finished third in the election on February 25 won by Bola Tinubu of the ruling party, declared on Thursday that he will file a lawsuit to overturn the results.
“To regain our mandate, we will consider every peaceful and legal alternative. Nigerians will see that we won the election “During a news conference in the nation’s capital, Abuja, Obi of the Labour Party (LP) stated.
The Electoral Commission (Inec) reports that Bola Ahmed Tinubu, 70, won the presidential election with more over 8.8 million votes, or 36% of the vote, following a fight in which the opposition accused the election of “massive” fraud.
The nominee of the All Progressives Party (APC), a former governor of Lagos, will succeed outgoing president Muhammadu Buhari, 80, who has come under fire from all quarters for his appalling record and two mandates marked by a surge in poverty and insecurity.
A youth favorite, Peter Obi, 61, finished third with 25% of the vote, marking the first time in Nigeria’s democratic history that an outsider from the two major political parties finished in third place. Abubakar (29%) of the largest opposition party, a former vice president, took second place (PDP).
Despite the fact that the election was mainly calm, there were significant problems with the electronic transfer of results and delays in counting the votes, which infuriated many voters and the opposition parties who contend that the votes were heavily manipulated.
The Nigerian people (…) have again been stolen by our purportedly trustworthy leaders in this election, which will go down as one of the most contentious ever held in Nigeria, stated Obi.
The most populous country in Africa has historically experienced frequent claims of fraud and violence during elections. On Wednesday, Mr. Tinubu urged his rivals to “partner up” with him: “I want you to join us so that we may begin jointly reconstructing our national home.
Mr. Tinubu, who has a lot of power and is known as the “godfather,” “kingmaker,” or “boss,” has been accused of corruption numerous times throughout his career but has never been found guilty.
The deadline to launch a lawsuit for candidates who want to challenge the results of the election is 21 days after they are declared.
